Observations
Some observations...
According to a new study, giving birth in California is more dangerous than in Kuwait or Bosnia. Among the problems are usual culprits of poverty and ignorance that produce a lack of prenatal care. Also obesity. But mostly it is that so many women are having labor induced and caesarians. In fact, C-sections are the most common surgery in the country today. And of course the bill for them is much higher than natural childbirth.
It’s reported that Tiger Woods has finished his stint at a sex addiction clinic and will be returning to the links, though not the link with his divorcing wife. In South Africa, the president has three wives and not admits to fathering a child by another woman. He’s been accused of being a sex addict, too. The term addict lets these people off the hook in the minds of many, when it’s truly only a matter of personal responsibility. Like any other addict, they don’t have to indulge.
There are a lot of folks very upset that the Christmas plane failed bomber was Mirandized and given a lawyer. They say this is war so he should have been treated like any other prisoner. But should prisoners not have rights, too, especially in this gray area of terrorism? Does someone have to be in the military to attack an enemy? Surely not all of the terrorists are military, any more than colonists who harassed the British during our revolution were all in Washington’s army. Perhaps by according them human rights, we will get more out of them.
And finally, remember all the furor about the emails of the scientist involved in global warming? An investigation says there is no truth to three of the allegations that the man lied or fudged his figures. A investigation into a fourth issue is expected to produce a similar conclusion. Much to the disappointment of the deniers who claim it’s all a cover-up.
