Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...It would be rude to refer the President of the United States as the dipstick for the petroleum industry, but otherwise it’s hard to understand how he could announce plans to drill, baby, drill off of much of our coastline. Even if they find oil, which would take perhaps a decade, burning it would increase global warming.

Da-deet-da-deet...Carly Fiorina, running for the GOP nod to run for Senate from The Golden State, sent out a Passover message in which she spoke of everyone breaking bread together. But a big part of the ritual is that eating leavened bread is forbidden. That’s why they instead eat matzoh. It’s the thought, not the thinking, that counts.

Da-deet-da-deet...Good news at last for the mass of humanity that loves chocolate. A new study says that eating small amounts of the stuff – like a square not a whole bar – every day would reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke by 40%.

Da-deet-da-deet...Nine militia types associated with the Hutaree Christian extremists were arrested for planning murderous attacks on local and state police and the FBI. Said the wife of the ringleader, "It started out as a Christian thing. You go to church. You pray. You take care of your family. I think [he] started to take it a little too far."

Da-deet-da-deet...The corruption of the Catholic church extends deeply into the civil authority. In Ireland, local bishops persuaded the police to cover up their molestation of children. In Italy, the cops held a handful of Americans in jail for more than two hours because they held a news conference about the pope covering up for a priest who had raped 200 deaf boys.

Da-deet-da-deet...Anf finally, CNN’s ratings continue to plummet as they play the trash card trying to attract viewers from the competition. Said one despairing colleague, "They’ve become unwatchable. Serves them right."
