Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...Scientists have announced that they have definitively decided that it was an asteroid striking the Earth that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 millions years ago. The asteroid is estimated to have been about nine miles around and hit in Mexico with a force of one billion Hiroshima bombs. (Their certainty is scary.)

Da-deet-da-deet...(Speaking of dinosaurs), the head of the Republican National Committee and a bunch of prominent Republicans are distancing themselves from a fear-mongering fundraising tool produced by the RNC. Said one GOP official of the operative, "That he's so foolish and naive as to air that crap publicly and distribute printed copies is just appalling."

Da-deet-da-deet...Los Angeles officials, fed up with the greed of companies that put up huge electronic billboards arrested one of the perps on a seven-figure bail. The city says the billboards distract drivers. The charlatans claim it ain’t so. Then why do they put up the billboards.

Da-deet-da-deet...When I was going to school, there weren’t any fat children – oh maybe two or three in 12 years – and none was obese. Today, 20% of black and Hispanic children and 15% of whites are obese. There are many reasons – primarily eating and sleeping habits – and they all come down to failed parenting.

Da-deet-da-deet...A new report says that more than 40% of college students admitted to symptoms of alcohol abuse or dependance. Another study estimates that a half-million college students are hurt annually from drinking-related accidents, and 1,700 are killed.

Da-deet-da-deet...An announcement that they are shutting down a main runway for repairs at JFK was accompanied by service cut backs and significant price increases by the airlines. Why don’t they just reschedule their flights to off hours?

Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, in Denise’s tailoring class at a local junior college, several of the students said they couldn’t find 5/8ths of an inch on their tape measures.
