Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...Two adjoining headlines in the Reuters digest tells us where we are. The first reads "Nearly 20 percent of U.S. workers underemployed." The next headline says "Wall Street bonuses jumped 17 percent last year."

Da-deet-da-deet...A year ago President Obama budgeted $25 million for new airport scanners. Not one has yet been installed. It took the Department of Homeland Security seven months just to order the scanners, and now they are sitting with the Transportation Safety Administration which is working on a plan to install them.

Da-deet-da-deet...A friend of mine, associated with a political club, is organizing a candidate’s night for her organization and another. The audience are most educated likely voters. She called to ask me what is the best way to get their invitation to the right person. I told her, be direct; write," Dear so-and-so, we have photographs of you with farm animals." Hey, you don’t think that would get a call back?

Da-deet-da-deet...A 23-year-old woman pled guilty to charges that she had allowed her infant son to starve to death. She did so at the behest of a woman she thought of as godly who said the child shouldn’t be fed because he didn’t say "amen" after a mealtime prayer. The mother, now testifying against the godly woman, agreed to plead guilty on the condition that if her son is resurrected, as she believes will happen, the plea will be vacated. According to the Associated Press, the court "accepted that extraordinary condition, specifying that only a ‘Jesus-like resurrection’ would suffice."

Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, Lauren Ashley is from Pasadena but she is calling herself Miss Beverly Hills in a statewide beauty pageant. Beverly Hills ain’t happy about that, especially since this is another one of the those Bible-quoters who believes she should decide which people are entitled to marry. Beauty is so often just skin deep.
