Bits & Pieces
Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.
Da-deet-da-deet...We are spending $65 billion a year on so-called intelligence, but it’s hard to see what we’re getting for it. The Iranians are reported to have moved all of their semi-processed uranium to a single above-ground site, and no one who should know knows what it means, or at least owns up to knowing it. (You know how these spooks are; instead of telling the people the truth, they sit on information for their own reasons.) The guesses run the gamut from taunting Israel and spoiling for war to simply having made a mistake.
Da-deet-da-deet...Back in 2006, a dozen Danish cartoonists published drawings that some in the Islamic world found offensive. There were riots at numerous Danish embassies and death threats against the cartoonists and the publishers. In January there was a murder attempt on one of the cartoonists. Last week, a Danish newspaper, Politiken, apologized for offending anyone when two years ago they reprinted a cartoon that showed the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb-shaped turban. The editor who published the originals excoriated the other paper, saying, "Politiken's pathetic prostrating before a Saudi lawyer takes the first prize in stupidity."
Da-deet-da-deet...Shame on you for thinking the California Legislature never gets anything done. The State Assembly has passed a non-binding resolution that calls for people not to say bad words during the first week in March. "No Cuss Week" passed on a voice vote.
Da-deet-da-deet...All they need is a few good men...at the top. The commandant of the Marine Corps declared his opposition to ending the don’t-ask-don’t-tell policy before a House committee. They insist that they are courageous, but they probably mean hypocritical.
Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, there are now 343 retirees from the Orange County, California school and college district who are receiving a six-figure pension. No wonder they have to lay off working teachers.
