Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...A voracious species of Asian carp is making its way through Illinois waterways. If it gets to Lake Michigan and then into the other Great Lakes, it could destroy the $7 billion a year fishing industry. There was a plan to block off the locks in Chicago that open onto the lake. The Obama administration wouldn’t do it. Said an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council, "It appears to be politically negotiated rather than scientifically based...sort of like trying to cut the baby in half. It offers a lot of middle-ground alternatives with no discussion of why any of them would actually work."

Da-deet-da-deet...Glen Beck is described as a Libertarian but lunatic sounds more appropriate. On one of his displays, he castigated a fast-rising independent in the Texas gubernatorial race for suggesting – and then retracting – that maybe the Bushies knew about Nine-Eleven in advance. Said Beck, "I think I can write her off the list. Let me take another look at Kay Bailey Hutchison if I have to. Rick," he added, speaking of incumbent Governor Rick Perry, "I think you and I could French kiss right now." Why would anyone watch such psycho-trash?

A jury found a man guilty of murdering his wife and stuffing her body in the bottom of a toy chest; this while their two young children were in the apartment. The jury also determined that the man had been sane when he used two knives to stab the woman 68 times. No one who does that is sane.

Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, in a national poll, 79% of Democrats said they supported gay men and lesbians serving openly in the military. When these same people were asked if they supported homosexuals serving openly in the military, only 43% said yes. This democracy thang...
