Bits & Pieces

Bits and pieces from this reporter’s notebook.

Da-deet-da-deet...Ya gotta think some producer is going to come up with a new version of the Paddy Chayefsky film "Network" that plays out the stunning stumble by NBC over their late night programming. It will be a film without heros, but some red-haired guy will be celebrated for his victimhood because he couldn’t attract viewers until his show was canceled. He’ll walk away with $30 million and when he starts again on Fox, his ratings will start high, and then fall to ignominy.

Da-deet-da-deet...In an unrelated but related matter...Sleep is one of the most under-rated factors for better health. A new study says if more people – especially the young – got more sleep, there would be less depression, and the problems that arise from it. Those who stay up late consistently face a markedly higher risk of suicide.

Da-deet-da-deet...Not letting facts stand in the way of opinion, the former NFL official in charge of brain injuries still insists that football players who keep smashing their heads don’t wind up with serious brain injuries. This, despite the fact that retired football players show a grossly disproportionate number of head problems.

Da-deet-da-deet...And speaking of brain injuries, the Black Robed Nine has decided that buying elections in the name of freedom of speech is Constitutional.

Da-deet-da-deet...If you think Afghanistan is ever gonna get anything like a functional government, think again. A new study says that one-quarter of the country’s gross domestic product is money paid in bribes.

Da-deet-da-deet...Finally, a California meatpacker is recalling some 390 tons of hamburger, some of it produced two years ago. Apparently there is a threat of ecoli contamination. That’s a lot of meat. Enough to make over three million quarter-pounders. Ya gotta think that many people in Haiti are hungry enough that they would be glad to risk the disease.
