Alaskan Swan Dive

It would probably be compassionate, or at least polite, to briefly wave a sympathy flag in the direction of Sarah Palin, Okay, enough. It's good to get the emotions out of the way, so that one can focus on the enormity of her surprise announcement of resignation from the top executive government job in Alaska.

There was immediate presumption that she was stepping down so as to be able to focus on her presumptive presidential bid. Though it seemed like a dumb move since as governor, she would have had a forum for proving her actual leadership skills.

There was also considerable gum-flapping about how Palin’s now-invigorated White House bid might affect Mitt Romney's shot, especially since Mark Sanborn and John Ensign had screwed themselves out of the race. So to speak.

But then I heard that Palin might have resigned because she was facing possible indictment on federal charges of mixing government funds with personal. Suddenly the suddenness of her departure announcement made more sense. In fact, it was the only explanation that managed all of the details.

If she's being knocked out of politics in unceremonious fashion, she earned it. She was a major factor in John McCain's defeat. Her two months on the campaign trail drove away the serious Republicans, and ignited the bastard core of anger-spewing fundamentalist neoliths. She brought out the worst in the worst Americans, with her anti-intellectualism and fear-mongering. And be clear about this, too, that if Palin looked like Bella Abzug, she wouldn't have won the Wasila mayoralty.

Her fall may have some silver linings...for instance, for those who hold dear the Christ Consciousness. Maybe they can speak up now about the need for character and truth. And if they need a starting point, they might speak to the issue of what brought down Palin, her prayers or ours.
